A set of historic cottages have hit the market for $3.2million even though one doesn’t have a roof.

The two buildings in Launceston, Tasmania, were built in 1895 to house the manager of the Duck Reach Power Station.

For the past 30 years however, they have been owned by finer arts dealer Peter Morton who has now decided to sell.

Unfortunately one of the cottages was completely gutted by fire in 2011 and will need rebuilding at an estimated cost of $400,000.

Mr Morton said he knew a lot about the former power station, the first in Australia, before moving in.

‘It was an amazing adventure and a great privilege to live here for 30 years almost,’ he told the ABC.

‘I knew about the property before it came onto the market and I always fantasised about owning it. I thought what a wonderful place to live in.

‘I couldn’t attend the auction. I had my father bid on my behalf and I said to him: “Get that property for me, Dad, if you don’t get it, I’m leaving home and I’m changing my name”.’

The property is perched on top of a hill surrounded by towering cliffs just seven minutes outside of Launceston’s CBD.

It sits on 2.99 hectares of land and includes two cottages and four titles in the selling price.

Shane Dennington from the Duck Reach Historic Society said he believes the site is ‘beyond repair’ after the property was let go.

But Fall Real Estate Chris Huxtable told Daily Mail Australia the stone is ‘still very much intact’.

‘It’s a unique opportunity as property like this rarely becomes available,’ she said.

‘It is the perfect site for an arts precinct or tourism type development because it is so gorgeous.’

The land is currently zoned for environment living but tourism accommodation zoning is subject to be approved by council.
