Burt Reynolds tries to clarify comments he made about Hoda Kotb

Burt Reynolds caused consternation last week with the strange comments he made on the Today show while chatting with host Hoda Kotb about his legendary life.

The 82-year-old actor attempted to clarify his remarks when he sat down with USA Today on Thursday to promote his upcoming film The Last Movie Star.

Burt revealed he was actually trying to compliment the host on her lips when he mangled it by saying: ‘I am so proud of you for not having your lips larger.’

Kotb laughed the strange compliment off, saying ‘OK Burt.’

But the Boogie Nights star still felt he needed to clarify that he was indeed trying to compliment the host.

‘It didn’t come out like that. I don’t know what the hell I said,’ Reynolds told USA Today.

‘”I never, ever meant to hurt her. I think she’s the best at doing what she does.’

The Deliverance star also tried to amend comments he’d made about his Smokey And The Bandit co-star Sally Field.

During his Today Show interview, Kotb asked Reynolds who was the love of his life.

‘Well, she was seven when I fell in love with her. She stayed seven for about 11 years. I would say Sally,’ replied the actor.

Reynolds revised that answer when he spoke to USA Today, saying: ‘I didn’t say 7. I said 37, I think.’

Field, who is now 71, had her first credited role in the TV series Gidget, when she was 19.

The actor and actress dated for five years beginning in the late 1970s.
