Bus slams into car at London junction but who to blame?

This is the dramatic moment a car driver who thinks he has been given right of way turns right and gets hit by a bus.

The footage, filmed on a dashcam in Kingston upon Thames, London, has sparked a fierce debate about who was at fault in the crash.

The person in the car, the bus driver and the HGV operator who shot the footage have all come in for criticism on social media.

The video, taken from an oncoming lorry, shows a dark-coloured Mazda stopping in the opposite lane and then trying to make a right turn.

But as the Mazda driver attempted the manoeuvre he was given a glancing blow by a red double-decker bus coming down the opposite lane.

HGV driver Nick Elliott says he made a hand gesture to the Mazda motorist to tell him to stop, but that this was misinterpreted as it being safe to turn.

Mr Elliott posted the video on Facebook, saying: ‘Car driver tried blaming me saying I waved him across when actually I put a hand up to tell him to wait.’

While the car driver says he was misled by the lorry, the bus driver has said he did not have time to react when the Mazda drove in front of him.

One Facebook user called Eric said: ‘Car to blame, you just don’t pull across without checking. Bus could have been driving a little bit slower I believe. He stopped way before bus hit him.’

Debbie Webster commented: ‘That has to be the car’s fault, car has turned into the path of the bus, it’s the bus’s right of way, you don’t pull out into oncoming traffic.’

John Smith blamed the bus driver, saying: ‘Looks like he had lots of time to react to that car stopped in front of him.’

A user called Tammy Lou questioned Mr Elliott’s actions, saying: ‘I doubt your claim that you signalled him to stop tbh as if that were me you’d have heard me say “no stop” or something similar when he clearly thanked you for letting him go. You were silently oblivious until the actual collision.’
