Busker opens up about dating Kurt Cobain as he rose to fame and how he left her for Courtney Love

A Boston busker has opened up about dating Kurt Cobain as he rose to fame, telling how she realized she was dumped when he announced he had been sleeping with Courtney Love live on TV.

Musician Mary Lou Lord met the Nirvana frontman shortly before the band exploded on the world stage and she would go on join him and the band on tour in London.

The two had met at Boston rock club the Rathskeller in September 1991 and quickly struck up a relationship over their shared love of music.

But after spending the night with Kurt as the European leg of the concerts launched two months later Mary Lou said she heard the singer on the phone to someone else in the early hours.

The next morning he told drummer Dave Grohl: ‘Oh, Courtney called.’

And Mary Lou would be left devastated when he would later go on to tell a TV audience: ‘I just want everyone in this room to know Courtney Love, the lead singer of the pop band Hole, is the best f*** in the world.’

Now Mary Lou has opened up about dating the star 25 years after his tragic death.

Speaking with CBS Mary Lou, from Salem, Massachusetts, said when she first met Kurt she ‘thought he was the roadie, I honestly did’.

The couple are said to have dated for around two months in late 1991 – right as Nirvana was first experiencing international stardom.

She was with Cobain in New York City as they watched the premiere of the ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ music video on MTV.

Lord said: ‘You could really feel that there was some kind of a change happening. You just had the sense of, I’m in the right place right now.’

But when Mary Lou was forced to return to Boston for work from Nirvana’s tour Cobain would go onto meet Love.

‘Kurt said to me, he’s like “no, please, please stay,”‘ Lord said. ‘I couldn’t.’

Love, who would go onto to have a child with Kurt, has publicly accused Mary Lou of harassment and trying to make a career from her time with Cobain

But after saving money to travel to see the band in London she says she was disappointed when Cobain seemed to grow cold after the late night chat with Love.

She says he asked her how she was going to get to the next tour stop in Wolverhampton.

Mary Lou told CBS: ‘I felt like saying, “I’m going with you”. But I said, “Oh, I have things to do in London,” which I didn’t, it was a lie. I just didn’t know what he meant.’

Lord added: ‘I said okay, and I gave him a kiss and a hug, and I said bye.’

But when he later announced Love as ‘the best f*** in the world’ on British TV Lord said she was confused.

She added: ‘I had been with him the night before. I didn’t know who Courtney Love was.’

Love, who would go onto to have a child with Kurt, has publicly accused Mary Lou of harassment and trying to make a career from her time with Cobain.

A note faxed to the Boston Phoenix in 1993 and signed Kurt Cobain said: ‘I NEVER had a relationship with her,’ the note read. ‘Please Mary whoever you are, leave me alone and see a therapist.’

But Lord thinks the note was faked.

Cobain died in April 1994 after taking his own life and Mary Lou said the star had been ‘born with a certain kind of loneliness’.

Lord added: ‘I didn’t have to see [loneliness] in Kurt, I knew that in Kurt, I felt that in Kurt,’ Lord said. ‘I could hear it even in his voice when he said “Please don’t leave”.’
