Four-year-old twin sisters have both died from smoke inhalation after their home caught fire overnight.

Emergency services were called to the Goonengarry home, 30km west of Byron Bay, about 4am on Sunday amid reports flames had engulfed the property.

They found two little girls, both aged four, suffering from smoke inhalation.

Paramedics performed CPR but both girls died at the scene.

A woman has been treated for shock.

The home itself was reportedly part of a ‘multiple occupancy’ community just 30km inland from Byron Bay.

Police are investigating whether a candle was left burning inside the home overnight.

Detectives will work with fire investigators, who remain on the scene, to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
