Cadbury has announced the launch of its first vegan chocolate bar, with two different flavours to pick from.

The new plant-based offering takes inspiration from the Birmingham-based brand’s Dairy Milk, which is the second most popular chocolate bar in the UK – according to a 2021 YouGov poll – sitting just below Maltesers in the ranking.

Cadbury’s Plant Bar is the product of two years of development and will finally arrive in Sainsbury’s stores from November, before being rolled out to other retailers from January 2022.

Chocolate fans rejoiced online as the announcement was made on the brand’s social media accounts – with one foodie writing: ‘It’s about time’.

Cadbury apologised for ‘taking this long’ to produce its ‘delicious bar without the “glass and half”‘ as it revealed the two flavours – smooth chocolate and smooth chocolate with salted caramel pieces.

The Plant Bar, which has been approved by The Vegan Society, is made with a blend of cocoa, almond paste, and rice extract, to deliver ‘delicious chocolate, with a lusciously smooth texture’.

Accompanying the announcement, Cadbury issued an apology to all plant-based eaters across the country, saying: Dear plant-based Britain, we’re sorry.

‘Sorry it’s taken this long. Sorry it seemed like we weren’t listening to your calls. Sorry for not being able to respond to the rumours. And sorry for all the other chocolate you’ve had to eat while you waited.

‘We simply wanted it to be perfect. And, just as with plants, perfection takes time. But the Cadbury Plant Bar is finally ready.

‘A delicious smooth chocolate without the “glass and half”. We hope you’ll agree it was worth the wait.’

Michael Moore, Marketing Manager at Cadbury, said: ‘We’re delighted to finally confirm that the rumours swirling around Cadbury Plant Bar are true!

‘We’ve worked hard to add this delicious, dairy-free option to our iconic range, and we can only apologise for making our fans wait.

‘Ensuring we deliver against our commitment to exceptional flavour has taken quite some time, but as of November, the wait is over.’

Past research revealed that more than a quarter of plant-based Britons rank Cadbury Dairy Milk as their most missed chocolate treat, so this launch is sure to be a welcome addition.

The 90g Plant Bar will RRP at £2.50 and will be available in Sainsbury’s nationwide from November 2021 and newsagents and supermarkets across the UK from January 2022.
