There is fury every time Cadbury hikes the price of a Freddo, as people fondly remember a time when the frog-shaped treats sold for just 10p.
It is no wonder then that there was outrage online when a Freddo fan spotted the chocolates on sale at Sainsbury’s for a whopping 68p when they usually sell for just 25p each.
She snapped a picture of the treats and asked her followers: ‘Am I seeing straight rn [right now]?’
But there is more to the picture than first appears, and eagle-eyed chocolate connoisseurs spotted that Sainsbury’s is actually offering a very good deal, as the price is for six of the 18g bars.
This Twitter user was shocked to see Freddos selling for 68p – but then realised that the price is for six of the 18g bars, which actually makes it a very good deal, with the chocolates priced at 11p each
The bars usually retail at 25p each, but buying six of them for 68p at Sainsbury’s means they work out at just 11p a bar.
The surprisingly good deal was pointed out by many Freddo fans after Twitter user Aa first pointed out the seemingly high price in a shap shared with her followers.
The post went viral, with more than 5,000 likes, as chocolate lovers reacted with fury at the extremely high price of a Freddo.
One said: ’60 what,’ with a gif of a perplexed-looking man.
Another added: ‘The Fudge [bars] must be 1 pound [sic].
One user joked: ‘I remember when they were free on the NHS.’
But then others pointed out that the price was only so high because it is for six of the 18g bars, which is stated on the label in Aa’s photo.
The price of a Freddo is currently 25p after Cadbury lowered it following a backlash after raising it to 30p last year
Some people were furious with the high price of the Freddos before they realised that the cost was for six of the 18g bars
Many people pointed out that the deal is actually very reasonable, as Freddos have not been 10p or nearabouts since they first relaunched in the UK in 1994
In March this year, Cadbury announced Freddo bars will cost 25p again – a year after raising the price of the Dairy Milk chocolate treat to 30p.
The cost of the 18g Cadbury bar has risen steadily over the last 10 years, after first re-launching in the UK in 1994 when the price was just 10p.
The cost of a Freddo bar is often used as an unofficial benchmark by which the price of consumer goods are tracked, and whenever the price is raised, fans fly into a frenzy.
In June, Cadbury launched new Freddo Biscuits, which are half dipped in milk chocolate, at £1.50 a packet.
Some rave about the new treats but others are not impressed that the biscuits are not dipped in Dairy Milk chocolate.
