Cailtin Close triple stabbing: man charged with murder following incident at Whalan

A man has been charged with murder and two others with serious offences over an alleged triple stabbing sparked by a dispute over a Playstation and a cat.

A 40-year-old father, his 19-year-old son and 23-year-old brother were allegedly attacked by the trio at Whalan Reserve near Cailtin Close in Whalan, western Sydney, at 7.30pm on Wednesday.

The father was treated by paramedics but died at the scene while the others were rushed to Westmead Hospital for surgery.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at Granville Police Station. He was charged with murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (x2) and affray.

A second man – aged 19 – was arrested at Mt Druitt Police Station. He was charged with affray.

A third man also aged 19 was arrested at Granville Police Station. He was charged with accessory after the fact to murder, affray and fail to comply with form of demand.

The trio were refused bail and will face Parramatta Local Court on Friday.

During a police press conference on Thursday, Mount Druitt Police Area Command Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner told reporters that a group of up to eight people arrived on a ute when a knifeman jumped off the back and stabbed the three family members.

Inspector Tickner said the three men were at the reserve for a pre-arranged fight with another group.

‘The two parties involved used to live together and there’s been a bit of a falling out over the last few days,’ Inspector Tickner alleged.

Police claim there had been insults exchanged on social media but it allegedly escalated to a ‘point that’s just ridiculous … over a dispute about not paying rent and some property that was taken in retribution of it.’

He called the stabbing a ‘senseless act’ over something ‘trivial.’

The group had initially met up to have a one-on-one fight, but it quickly turned into an all-in melee.

Police confirmed the two used to live together but fell out over a dispute over the animal, not paying rent and who owned the gaming console.

That disagreement has left one man dead after being stabbed in the neck, with two others fighting for their lives.

‘It’s escalated to a point where it’s just ridiculous that a person’s lost their life, two people are in hospital — one’s still fighting for their life — over a dispute over not paying rent and some property that was taken in retribution for it,’ Inspector Tickner said.

Usually in use for numerous sports over summer, Whalan Reserve was taken over by police, sniffer dogs, paramedics, and a rescue helicopter last night.

Police confirmed the man, 25, is in a stable condition with a laceration to his arm, while the teenager is in a critical condition with injuries to his torso and arm.

Also at the gruesome scene was a white ute overturned with smashed glass across the grass.

After the three men were stabbed a person from the victim’s party allegedly attempted to run the offenders over with a ute.

During the attempt the ute is reported to have flipped onto its roof.

Shocked locals were also spotted looking on at the confronting scenes, with police yet to confirm if they have apprehended a potential suspect.

Officers established a crime scene and launched an investigation. No one has been arrested and charges are yet to be laid.
