A super-sized spa treatment is causing a serious stir on social media thanks to its very quirky concept, which sees guests being rubbed down and scrubbed with an enormous loofah.
Burke Williams Spa in Santa Monica recently debuted a new wet room treatment that uses a body-sized loofah to exfoliate the skin, according to Insider.
Called the Hunter’s Retreat, the soothing treatment begins with an exfoliating scrub and while it does look like a interesting experience, some people aren’t too convinced of the treatments relaxing effects with some who said it’s unsanitary.
A day at the spa: Burke Williams Spa in Santa Monica, California, has an unusual spa treatment called the Hunter’s Retreat that uses a giant loofah made of wheat stalks
Cleansed: The description for the treatment said that ‘you are cleansed with wheat stalks soaked in exotic oils’
Relaxation time: The treatment, which lasts 40 minutes, ranges in price from $105 to $160 based on spa membership and location
The description read: ‘You are then cleansed with wheat stalks soaked in exotic essential oils while cascades of warm water immerse your entire body. After being toweled dry, the massage finishes with a light moisturizing oil.’
The treatment, which lasts 40 minutes, ranges in price from $105 to $160 based on spa membership and location (the spa has locations in other areas of California such as Pasadena, San Jose and San Francisco).
It was tested in the three-minute video, looked similar to a drive-thru car wash but instead of getting a cleaner vehicle, spa-goers are being rid of dead skins cells.
‘This is the bubble bath of my dreams,’ Caroline Aghajanian, the spa tester, said in the video as she was covered with the wheat stalks and soap suds.
Dreams: The spa tester shared in the video that the treatment was the ‘bubble bath of her dreams’
The process: The video showed the spa treatment, which started with an exfoliating scrub on her body that the masseuse rubbed on her back, legs and arms
So fun: During the treatment, she said it was way too much fun and that it ‘kind of feels like when seaweed attacks you in the ocean’
Feels good: The the massage manager in the video added that the treatment is done to ‘feel good and excite the nervous system’
The video then cut to the spa treatment, which started with an exfoliating scrub on her body that the masseuse rubbed on her back, legs and arms while Caroline lied face down.
The wheat stalks are then soaked in oils by the massage manager and moments later, Caroline is covered in the giant loofah.
‘This is just way too much fun,’ she said. ‘This kind of feels like when seaweed attacks you in the ocean.’
Preston Ranyard, the massage manager, added: ‘It feels good and it’s mildly exfoliating. But mainly it’s to feel good and excite the nervous system.’
Car wash: Someone tweeted that the treatment was very similar to a ‘human car wash’
Spending money to get clean: Another person likened the treatment to paying to get clean
Still dirty: Someone else tweeted that the giant loofah wasn’t even getting her clean
Unsanitary: Another person tweeted that the treatment looked ‘all types of unsanitary’
Other wet room treatments at Burke Williams Spa include Savannah’s Surrender and the Salt or Sugar Glo.
Since the video of the Hunter’s Retreat treatment was shared to Twitter, many have taken to the social media platform to share their ideas on the interesting spa method with some who said they want to get it and others who commented on its similarity to a car wash.
One person said: ‘Soooo…it’s like a human car wash’ while another person said: ‘Basically spending money for someone to wash you.’
Another person tweeted: ‘She not even getting clean smh’ and someone else said: ‘This looks all types of unsanitary.’
Not food: Another person tweeted that she thought the spa was scrubbing her with spaghetti instead of wheat stalks
Unusual exfoliation: Someone else had the same idea and though the giant loofah was made out of ramen noodles
Inspiration: Someone tweeted that Kelloggs shredded wheat could use the spa’s Hunter’s Retreat treatment as inspiration
Scrub time: And while an interesting method, the treatment still made someone was a scrub
Others, however, were reminded of food when they saw the wheat stalks as someone shared: ‘I thought that was spaghetti’ while another tweet said: ‘Thought that was ramen noodles.’
And one person tweeted: Well, Kelloggs shredded wheat now has fresh inspiration for a new commercial, should they choose to accept it!’
But there were some who admitted that it was an interesting exfoliation approach but one that caught their eye.
The tweet said: ‘Interesting…..now I want a scrub.’
