Cambridge don strips off again – for equality

Exhibitonist university lecturer Dr Victoria Bateman is at it again.

Four years after posing nude for a portrait shown at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London, the economics fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, has stripped down to make a point about gender inequality.

Posing in the historic university after giving a talk, entitled Feminism Meets Economics, at the Office for National Statistics, she covers her modesty with only a handful of £5 and £20 notes.

‘I’m a great believer in the power of art, which explains why I chose to dress like this,’ she says.

‘Art has a power that allows us to go beyond what the written or spoken word can offer.

‘Unless economists take feminism seriously, women’s rights and free-doms will continue to be under threat.

‘Economics needs to become intimately familiar with modern-day feminism if we are to make progress.’

Actress Lily James has become a football addict, after ‘religiously’ watching the World Cup.

The 29-year-old, winning plaudits for her part in the Mamma Mia! sequel, says: ‘The World Cup — nothing in theatre can achieve that level of drama, where anything can happen, and commitment and power. It’s art. Other than Mamma Mia!, what gets a crowd like that leaping to their feet?’

John Bercow, the tennis-mad, Arsenal-supporting Speaker of the House of Commons, is still enjoying the sporting life.

The latest update to the Register of Members’ Financial Interests records that, in June, he accepted two tickets to the Queen’s Club Championships ‘with associated hospitality’, worth £630 in total.

In April, it was reported he had accepted sports tickets and hospitality worth more than £16,000 as gifts in the previous year.

At the time, a spokesman said Bercow had declared all hospitality in accordance with the rules. It’s game, set and match to Bercow when it comes to freebies.

Hot on her tail was former Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife Samantha, 47, who enjoyed the same high jinks yesterday with her son, Arthur, 12, on her lap.

What NOT to wear to the airport

Former What Not To Wear host Susannah Constantine certainly likes to stand out.

Appearing at a foreign airport, the 56-year-old TV star posed in a fetching blue bathing suit in the middle of holidaymakers.

‘What’s worse . . . swimsuit on airport run or PJs on school run?’ she asks beside the picture on social media.

Her followers are divided. ‘What you should always wear,’ wrote her former co-star Trinny Woodall.

Another fan took the opposite view: ‘This is something you dared yourself to do and [it] actually made you look a bit knobby.’

Bestselling writer Lee Child was lost for words when a woman put him on the spot during a post-talk Q&A at the weekend.

‘A lady in the front row stood up and, jabbing her finger at me, said: “Mr Lee Child, you’re a very deceitful man!” ’ the 63-year-old told an audience at Harrogate’s Crime Writing Festival.

‘When I asked what I’d done wrong, she accusingly said: “The author photograph on the back of your novels is at least 20 years out of date!” ’

The writer — whose Jack Reacher novels have sold 100 million copies — added wryly: ‘I’ve naturally updated my photo since.’
