Cameron Norrie’s ATP Finals hopes have been left hanging by a thread after the Brit suffered defeat to Taylor Fritz.

The American, who removed fifth seeded Russian Andrey Rublev from his path in the previous round, beat Norrie in straight sets (6-3 7-6) in the last-16 at the Paris Masters to put the Brit’s chances of heading to Turin in doubt.

Norrie faces a four-way battle for the remaining two spots in the season-ending, eight-man tournament this month.

Jannik Skinner, Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud are also in contention and the British No 1 sits the furthest back of the quartet.

With 1,000 points still to play for the in the French capital, overcoming Fritz was essential.

But Norrie must now win the Stockholm Open next week and rely on Hurkacz losing his quarter-final match against Australian James Duckworth on Friday.

The 26-year-old was handed a small boost when Skinner failed to make the last-16 in Paris after being beaten by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday, but his chance to leapfrog into a qualifying spot has been wasted.

Meanwhile, Norrie’s final rival Norway’s Rudd progressed to the last-16 round with Norrie and Hurkacz but has yet to play his match against Marcos Giron.
