Camilla joins Dame Judi Dench for an ice cream on the Isle of Wight

Tuesday saw the Duchess meet the Dame as Camilla and Judi Dench met for an ice cream on the Isle of Wight.

The Duchess of Cornwall met with the actress on Queen Victoria’s private beach, next to the monarch’s holiday home of Osborne House in East Cowes this morning.

The royal and the Oscar winner, who have met on several occasions, could be seen enjoying a catch up over a vanilla ice cream complete with a flake.

The Duchess of Cornwall appeared to be struggling with her ice cream as she joined Dame Judi Dench in the Isle of Wight on Tuesday

But with the UK in the grips of a heatwave Camilla appeared to have a little trouble with her frozen treat.

The 71-year-old royal could be seen struggling to keep the clotted cream vanilla dripping on her white dress.

Luckily Dame Judi, 83, was on hand to help, offering the Duchess of Cornwall a napkin to clean herself up.

The actress, who patron of the Friends of Osborne House, will show Camilla the newly restored Durbar Room, which was one of the locations for the film Victoria and Abdul in which she played Queen Victoria.

Osborne House was purchased by Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 and was one of the Queen’s favourite family homes – she once said: ‘It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot.’

After her death in 1901, the house was given to the state and parts of the pavilion first opened to the public as early as 1904.

It is now cared for by English Heritage and is open to the public year round.

This will be Camilla’s first visit to Victoria’s former holiday home since her last trip in 2009.

Upon her arrival on the beach today Camilla received a warm welcome from local school children much to her delight.

The Duchess spent time chatting to each of them before joining Dame Judi for her admittedly messy ice cream.

Later Camilla will have a short walkabout in Cowes where crowds are expected to have gathered in preparation of her arrival.

She will then take part in a naming ceremony for the new red Funnel ferry Red Jet 7.

Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Sir Martin White, said ahead of her visit: ‘It will be a pleasure to welcome Her Royal Highness back to the Island where she will not only be able to meet Islanders and visitors but also see some of the changes that have been made in the intervening years.’
