Can you guess the weight of the Windsor babies, from featherweight to whopper?

It’s one of the very first questions when a newborn arrives: ‘how much do they weigh?’

And when Princess Eugenie announced the birth of her new son, Ernest, on Instagram, she was happy to  share the news that he tipped the scales at 7lbs 1oz.

This is close to the national average – and to his senior cousins Princes William and Harry.

But the Windsor babies have come in a wide variety of sizes over the past century or so, as our graphic shows – from a tiny 4lbs 9oz to a new arrival at more than twice the weight.

The lightest royal baby was Lady Louise, who weighed just 4lbs 9oz, while Zara Tindall’s youngest daughter, Lena, was the heaviest royal baby, weighing 9lbs 3oz

Lady Louise – 4lbs 9oz

Lady Louise was born on November 8 2003, four weeks early, when her mother Sophie, Countess of Wessex went into labour at 36 weeks pregnant.

At the time, her husband Prince Edward was in Mauritius – a 12-hour flight away – for an official visit. He had been contacted, but there was no way he could return until the next day.

She had been rushed to Frimley Park Hospital in Sussex after complaining of severe internal pains, where doctors found her seriously ill after she lost nine pints of blood through internal bleeding.

They had to perform an emergency caesarean as the condition was threatening to kill both her and her baby.

The tiny baby was delivered weighing just 4lbs 9oz. Baby Louise was then rushed to receive specialist care St George’s Hospital, while Sophie had remained 35 miles away in Frimley Hospital for another 16 days until she had recovered.

The official announcement from Buckingham Palace was made two days later, explaining the emergency caesarean and that Prince Edward had been on an official visit.

The statement added: ‘Her Royal Highness and her daughter will remain in hospital for the foreseeable future.’

Years later, in 2014, Sophie made an emotion return to Frimley Park Hospital to officially open a new neonatal unit.

Fighting back the tears she said: ‘I want to say well done to everyone for your fundraising, and for all the work you do to help thousands of families – your service is the difference between life and death.

‘I know all the staff are really keen to get everything started. It is a great working environment and the results you are having are testament to this investment.

‘It has been something really important in my life and so I thank you again for inviting me here today.’

Prince Edward – 5lbs 7oz

Prince Edward was born on March 10, 1964, and was the lightest baby out of his siblings weighing just 5lbs 7oz.

The youngest child of the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh was born at Buckingham Palace.

For this birth, the Queen broke royal tradition by having Prince Philip join her in the delivery room, as written in his birth announcement ‘His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was present’.

The Queen had read in magazines about fathers being involved in the childbirth so wanted to do the same, royal expert Ingrid Seward wrote in her book ‘My husband and I: The Inside Story of 70 years of Royal Marriage’.

She said: ‘The Queen, by then aged 37, had asked him to be there; she’d been keenly reading women’s magazines that stressed the importance of involving fathers in childbirth and had become fascinated by the idea.

‘Thus Philip became the first royal father in modern history to witness the arrival of one of his children.’

Princess Anne – 6lbs

Princess Anne of Edinburgh was born on August 15, 1950, at 11.50am weighing exactly 6lbs.

Unlike her three brothers, the Queen’s only daughter was born at Clarence House rather than Buckingham Palace as it was undergoing renovations because of damage caused to the building during World War Two.

Prince Edward described his son at the time as ‘very cute and very cuddly’. He added that he was relieved the birth was ‘a lot calmer than last time’ and that his wife was ‘doing very well’.

‘The weight of the baby was 6lbs 2oz. The Earl of Wessex was present.’

The couple did not have a name upon the announcement of the child’s birth, with the Earl of Wessex adding: ‘We didn’t know, we had no idea what we were going to get, we hadn’t asked.

‘You have to at least get to know the small person who’s just come into the world before you actually try and pick a name.’

King Charles – 7lbs 6oz

Prince Charles was the heaviest baby out of his siblings, weighing 7lbs 6oz when he was born on November 14 1948.

The Queen, then known as Princess Elizabeth, was reportedly in labour for a painful 30 hours before she gave birth by Caesarean section.

At the time of the birth, Prince Philip was not present. Instead, along with the Queen’s father King George VI, Prince Philip ‘paced the floor’, his Private Secretary Mark Palmer said.

But Ms Searward said: ‘Eventually Parker took the Duke off for a game of squash.

”Well, time stretched a bit and he was getting restless’, Mr Parker recalled.

‘When the King’s Private Secretary Tommy Lascelles bought the good news, Philip bounded upstairs into the Buhl Room, which had been converted into an operating theatre.

‘He then held his firstborn, still wearing his sporting flannels and open-necked shirt.’

When the Princess came round from her anesthetic, the Duke of Edinburgh was there with a bottle of champagne and a large bouquet of red roses and carnations, the Queen’s favourite flowers that his equerry had the foresight to buy earlier.

According to the 2013 Netflix documentary, ‘The Royals’ when he met his first son, he declared he looked like a ‘plum pudding’.

Charles’ birth was the first royal birth since the 18th century that a British Home Secretary did not attend to verify the birth of the royal children.

The Queen, in a letter to her former music teacher, wrote after the birth: ‘The baby is very sweet, and we are enormously proud of him. He has an interesting pair of hands for a baby.

‘They are rather large, but with fine long fingers quite unlike mine and certainly unlike his father’s. It will be interesting to see what they become. I still find it hard to believe I have a baby of my own!’

The birth of the future King was said to be a boost to the morale of post-war Britain, with crowds outside the Palace chanting ‘We want Philip’.

When he did not step out on the balcony, they turned to sing lullabies instead.

Peter Phillips – 7lbs 9oz

The late Queen’s first grandchildren, Peter Phillips, was born on 15 November 1977 at St Mary’s hospital London weighing an impressive 7lbs 9oz.

He was born to Princess Anne and her first husband Captain Mark Phillips.

The of Peter saw a royal tradition broken, as Princess Anne declined the Queen’s offer to give Peter, and later his younger sister Zara, a royal title, meaning he would not have HRH status nor be a working royal.

It was the Queen who uncharacteristically broke the news about Peter's birth. She had been due to have been at an honours event at Buckingham Palace at the time, when she told guests: 'I apologies for being late, but I have just had a message from the hospital. 'My daughter has given birth to a son.' Pictured: The Queen and Princess Anne at Peter's Christening

Lili weighed 7lbs 11oz, almost the exact same as her cousin Mia Tindall, with the announcement of her birth being made by Meghan’s press secretary on June 6.

Buckingham Palace then released a statement later that day also confirming the birth, which read: ‘The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.’

Mia Tindall – 7lbs 12oz

Zara and Mike Tindall’s eldest daughter Mia Grace was born on January 17 2014.

Mia was delivered on the NHS at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, weighing 7lbs 12oz.

New mothers who were on the same maternity ward as Zara had no idea of the extra special arrival as it was kept a secret by midwives.

Charity worker Vicky Love who gave birth to 9lbs 1oz son Isaac said: ‘I had no idea. The staff did not say anything, and it seems as though she was treated the same as the rest of us.’
