A Canadian expat has listed the things he didn’t know existed until he moved to Australia – including an iconic drinking game called ‘fridge to fridge’ that left many Aussies confused.

Paul Ferrante, who lives in Sydney after moving to Australia from Canada in 2013, said one thing he discovered was the party ritual Down Under.

‘If you’re not Australia, these words probably mean nothing to you,’ he said in a TikTok video.

‘Fridge to fridge is basically where you and your friends host parties at four or more houses. You theme the party, you dress up and you basically go to each house having about five drinks before you move on to the next house.

‘The goal is to make the last house but if you don’t, you’re actually the true winner because you’re probably the only person who didn’t have alcohol poisoning.’

However, many Aussies admitted they have ‘never ever heard of fridge to fridge’.

Paul reveals the three things he didn’t know existed in Australia

1. Fridge to fridge: An iconic drinking game where a group of people get dressed up and go from one house to another to get drunk

2. Cockatoos: White sulphur-crested birds commonly found in Australia

3. Swooping season: The swooping season comes around during the warmer months every year, with signs erected at parks to warn passersby of the aggressive magpies

‘Born and bred in New South Wales – never heard of it. Maybe it’s a city thing?’ one woman said, while another wrote: ‘Born, raised and lived in NSW for 33 of my 41 years, never heard of it.

And one add added: ‘I’m 46, lived in NSW my whole life. Never heard the phrase. I’ve heard of pub crawl but never once have I heard anyone say “fridge to fridge”.’

Others from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory confirmed they never knew about the party ritual either.

However, many Aussies insisted fridge to fridge does exist in the country.

‘Fridge to fridge is definitely a thing. Bonus points for fun transportation methods,’ one woman said.

While one man explained: ‘Every Year 12 student after their HSC did fridge to fridge. I’m from NSW and I thought all of Australia knew.’

Another woman added: ‘I’m amazed at how many Aussies don’t know what a fridge to fridge is,’ while one said: ‘I honestly thought it was an Australian-wide used term. Must just be NSW.’

Those living in Victoria revealed they played a similar game but was named under ‘Tour de fridge’.

‘First up is cockatoos. So being Canadian, the only time I ever saw one of these bad boys is probably in a pet shop,’ he said.

‘What I didn’t know is not only do these things live in Australia and are native, but they’d be flocking in public places no different than pigeons would back home.’

He said another thing he wished he knew before moving to the country was the aggressive magpies that come out during swooping season.

‘What I didn’t know is that birds literally attack you here. So between the months of August and October is when magpies mate. This means they are hostile as f***,’ he said.

‘If you go near their nest, they will literally swoop and attack you. And these three months ahead is called swooping season.’
