‘I felt disrespected’: Canadian worker is fired for tweet complaining about the $6 bottle of barbecue sauce his company gave him as a Christmas gift

  • The company let him go after he tweeted in complaint about the holiday gift
  • Canadian employees got BBQ sauce while U.S. employees got a ‘box of junkfood’

An employee who was gifted a bottle of BBQ sauce for the holidays from the ‘billion-dollar’ company he works for was fired after complaining about the present on Twitter.

Hussien Mehaidli, from Toronoto, Canada, was fired from his job as a general manager for the construction company Fastenal, after he complained that the Canadian employees were gifted a $6 bottle of BBQ sauce.

He claims their US colleagues were treated to a goodie box full of cookies, M&Ms, beef jerky, just as all the employees had in previous years.

From an anonymous Twitter account he tweeted: ‘What kind of multi billion-dollar company gifts it’s Canadian employees barbecue sauce as a holiday gift?

‘Yet the USA employees stuff their face with an actual holiday gift box!’

He shared the tweet with a picture of himself looking unimpressed next to the bottle of BBQ sauce, accidentally tagging his employer in the tweet.

After working hard to hit his sales targets all year the manager said the present felt like a slap in the face.

Mr Mehaidli told CTV: ‘I work really hard. We get pushed really hard to reach our sales goals.

‘I felt I gave this company so much and I felt really disrespected when I was given barbecue sauce as a holiday gift.’

The next day his boss from Fastenal gave him a call, but seemed to be unaware of his identity, calling him by his Twitter username.

Mr Mehaidli was called into a meeting and fired on December 30 for a 'violation of standards of conduct policy.'

Unfortunately, despite deleting his post, the worker was tracked down by the company who managed to work out who he was from the workplace background in another photo on the account.

Mr Mehaidli said the timing of the firing was the worst Christmas gift of all.

He told CTV: ‘Christmas just came by. There are bills to be paid, my visa bill.

‘Money is an issue. ‘I’m a very heavy believer in God and everything happens for a reason, but I believe I was done very, very dirty.’
