  • It’s alleged he then fired shots into the emergency ward’s ceiling 
  • Police tased and arrested the man at about 4.10pm on Wednesday  

Police have closed of parts off a hospital emergency ward after a patient allegedly used a police gun to terrorise patients and staff.

On Wednesday afternoon ACT Police were called to Canberra Hospital with reports of a patient acting erratically in the emergency department.

When police arrived its alleged the man was still running around the emergency ward before he somehow got his hands on a police officers firearm, 7 News reported.

It’s alleged the suspect then fired multiple shots into the hospital ceiling, hitting the sprinkler system before police were forced to use their taser’s to bring him down. 

Police were able to arrest the man at about 4.10pm on Wednesday afternoon. 

It’s not yet known how the man allegedly got the pistol from the police officer. 

A large portion of the Canberra Hospital emergency ward had to be closed off to the public with patients moved to a nearby ward. 

The Canberra Hospital confirmed to 7 News that the patient had indeed fired shots into the ceiling and that parts of the ward would remain closed through the night. 

A witness said they heard ‘screaming and lots of police’ as the incident unfolded.
