A drunk ute driver in a quiet suburban street stunned police officers when he performed a tyre-shredding burnout just meters away from their squad car.
Dashcam footage shows the Toyota ute pulling out in front of the marked police vehicle on the otherwise deserted street in the southern Canberra suburb of Gilmore last Friday.
The ute then slowly inches forward before the driver, 31, hits the accelerator and drops the clutch sending a huge cloud of white smoke into the air.

The vehicle managed to create a huge cloud of tyre smoke before it charged off down the street
Police initially reverse to a safe distance but then pursue the vehicle through the heavy smoke to an intersection where it turns right.
As officers activate their lights and sirens the ute eventually pulls over and comes to a stop in a side street.
Police alleged the driver was returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.151 – more than three times the legal 0.05 limit.

The Canberra resident’s drivers’ licence was immediately suspended and his vehicle seized.
He will face court at a later date on charges of drink driving and improper use of a motor vehicle.
Police said they would like to remind the community that ‘this type of behaviour will not be tolerated’.
