Cancer fraud who could pass as Belle Gibson’s evil twin sister watched her own mum shave her head

A cruel cancer faker sat back and watched her own mother shave her head to raise money to fund treatment for an illness she never had.

Alysha Rose Goring, 26, of Tarneit in Melbourne’s west, duped family and friends out of almost $10,000 which she blew on a fancy holiday to the United States.

Goring, who appeared in court on Wednesday with an almost identical look to despised cancer fraudster Belle Gibson, had gone so far as to shave her own head to mimic the devastating effects of radiation treatment.

Gibson made $420,000 after building a social media empire and releasing The Whole Pantry cookbook and app based on her false claims.

So devious was Goring that while enjoying her US holiday she sent emails to her family purporting to be from top US surgeon Charles Lu from the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas.

The despicable con woman sent several emails from the false gmail address telling her family – under the guise of Dr Lu – she had undergone surgery to ‘dramatically reduce the size of her brain tumour’.

She even went a step further, telling them she would need further surgery in Australia after suffering from seizures following her surgery.

The supposed doctor said Goring had booked into see top Aussie surgeon Charlie Teo, who has recently come under fire for his hefty fees which reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

The fake Lu claimed Goring had been resting in her hospital bed watching Harry Potter movies.

In reality, the vicious liar had been off visiting the zoo and other landmarks around Houston, where she flew into on April 7 last year.

Gibson wore virtually the same black coat and sunglasses on Wednesday as Gibson during her recent court appearance.

She began telling people she had liver cancer in March 2016 – about the same time Gibson was exposed for being a cancer fraud.

Goring had told friends and family she had been treated by the Royal Melbourne Hospital, which had ripped her off about $70,000 in cancer treatment and left her partly paralysed.

Her worried family starting giving her money and her brother flew in from his home in Queensland to be by her side.

Apart from her shaved head, Goring appeared to be physically well and carried on her job as a store manager at The Reject Shop in Werribee and still drove her car.

Around the house, Goring would make her mum and sister wear face masks so they wouldn’t make her sick.

She would get her friends to drop her off near Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, although no-one ever joined her there.

In reality, no cancer hospital in Australia had ever heard of Goring.

She’d not even mentioned cancer concerns to a local GP.

In June 2017, Goring took her cancer lie to work and The Reject Shop set up Cancer Council collection tins for her around the office.

The charity never saw a cent.

Customers and staff lavished her with gifts and in August they threw her a ‘remission party’ where she received more goodies.

In December that year she told friends while her liver cancer was in remission, she had developed brain cancer.

In 2018 she told people she was in stage four of the illness – an almost certain death sentence.

Goring’s distraught sister organised a fundraiser at her workplace, with generous people donating up to $4000 to supposedly fund her radiation treatment.

In March last year The Reject Shop held a fundraiser for her, with Goring banking hundreds of dollars.

The very next day her family and friends held another fundraiser at her Caroline Springs home.

There her mum and aunt shaved their heads for donations.

Everyone was ‘extremely generous’ and they raffled off footy tops, tickets and wine.

Her own father gave her $2000 – money he never saw again.

After her return from the United States, a suspicious friend started to investigate Goring’s illness.

She emailed Dr Lu – who came back two days later saying he had never heard of Goring.

Goring cut her friend off, but the jig was up.

Detectives checked her accounts and then checked her medical records.

She was fit as a fiddle.

Goring agreed she had made it all up.

She said ‘one lie became another lie’ and she rolled with it.

Goring fronted the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to obtaining $9639 by deception.

Her lawyer Joseph Palmara urged Magistrate Tony Burns not to jail his client.

He claimed Goring was mentally unwell and was now using anti-psychotic medications.

Mr Palmara said Goring had since secured work with retail giant Myer, which had supported her even after learning of her crimes.

He claimed she had paid back the money to her sister’s workplace and intended to pay back everyone she could identify.

But police prosecutor Sen-Constable Kerrie Bullman said Goring deserved nothing more than an immediate jail term.

‘It was much more than just a lie,’ she said. ‘She went to great lengths to trick people.’

The prosecutor said Goring had been so cruel as to ring a real cancer sufferer and dupe money out of her by claiming she had the same sort of cancer as her.

‘She’s been described in the media as a cancer con artist. And that’s exactly what she is and we seek a jail term,’ she said.

The magistrate agreed.

‘You ought be ashamed of yourself,’ Mr Burns said.

The experienced magistrate described Goring’s antics as a ‘calculated cash grab’ to fund a holiday, branding her actions ‘reprehensible’.

He jailed Goring for six months, which she appealed immediately.

Sitting in the prison dock, the remorseless criminal continued to use her phone until she was spotted by a police officer and told to put it away.

After spending an hour in the cells, Goring returned to court where she was granted appeal bail to reappear at the County Court of Victoria in September.
