The Mexican furthered his status as the sport’s very best as he handed Plant the first defeat of his career to become the first-ever undisputed super middleweight champion – and the first undisputed champion across any weight from Mexico.

Plant, who was put to the canvas twice in the 11th round before referee Russel Mora called a halt to proceedings, will earn a minimum of £7.4m as he relinquished his IBF strap.

That’s according to Dan Rafael, with the pair set to earn even more after receiving their pay-per-view bonuses.

Canelo embarked on his pursuit of super middleweight domination less than a year ago, with this weekend’s historic feat the most financially successful of his four fights since December last year.

The Mexican all-time great defeated Callum Smith in the backend of 2020 to claim the WBC and WBA titles, which he then defended in February against Avni Yildirim.

According to Forbes, Canelo made a total £23.7m for the two outings, nearly £7m shy of his minimum earnings this weekend.

Next up for Canelo was another intriguing unification bout against Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders, who caused the Mexican an array of problems early on before being stopped in brutal fashion in the eighth round. Canelo is believed to have received close to £25m for the fight.

Canelo, who became a free agent in November 2020, worked with Eddie Hearn and DAZN for his bouts against Smith, Yildirim and Saunders, with his bout against Plant being shown on Showtime PPV as he opted to work with Al Haymon.

Canelo was the overwhelming favourite going into the undisputed clash, though Plant’s cocktail of attributes, including a tight defence, sharp jab and ability to fight on the backfoot, was expected to pose some problems for the hard-hitting multi-weight champion.

Canelo has previously had some issues with fighters of similar styles, including his sole conqueror Floyd Mayweather, Erislandy Lara and most recently Saunders.

Indeed, Plant would have fleeting moments of success throughout the encounter but Canelo, often a slow starter, was bullish from the opening bell, with his relentless pressure proving too much for the now-former IBF champion.

The American was eventually put to the canvas twice in the 11th, with Canelo closing out the show in style. Plant was taken to hospital for an ‘observation’ following the defeat.

The stoppage added to Canelo’s impressive highlight reel, but the victory was already in the bag with the judges unanimously having the Mexican in the lead at the time of the stoppage, with scores of 96-94, 98-92 and 97-93.

Canelo dedicated his victory to the people of Mexico after another special night in Las Vegas.

‘This is for everybody, especially for Mexico,’ he said. ‘It’s another win for our team, but we did it tonight.

‘There are only six. It keeps me happy, very motivated to be one of the six undisputed champions of the world.’
