Canstar Blue reveals best supermarket roast chickens – including Costco, Woolworths, Coles and IGA

A $6.99 roast chicken has beat ones from major supermarkets Coles and Woolworths to be crowned the winner of 2021.

Costco has taken out the top spot in the annual rotisserie chicken ratings after consumer research group Canstar Blue surveyed more than 1,500 shoppers to find the best tasting pre-cooked chook on the market.

Australians voted for their favourite supermarket roast chickens based on taste, freshness, packaging design, value for money and overall satisfaction.

The top roast chickens 

1. Costco: $6.99

2. IGA: $11.50

3. Coles: $10

Despite charging an annual membership fee of $60, Costco was rated best for its succulent rotisserie chickens after being the only supermarket to score five stars across every category – including overall satisfaction, taste, freshness and value.

Trailing behind on three stars for overall satisfaction was Coles and Woolworths.

Coles came third after recieving a four-star rating for freshness, value for money and packaging, but fell short in taste with three stars.

To find the best supermarket chook, Canstar Blue asked consumers to compare and rate any roast chicken they’ve purchased and eaten in the past three months.

During the survey, they found 61 per cent of shoppers said they tend to buy a pre-cooked roast chicken from the supermarket as a ‘lazy’ meal.

One in five (21 per cent) shoppers typically picked up a hot chook as part of their regular grocery shop.
