Captain Johnny Sexton says Triple Crown success is just one step on Ireland’s journey towards next year’s World Cup.

The Irish claimed the first major silverware of Andy Farrell’s reign with a dominant 26-5 bonus-point victory over Scotland in Dublin.

But Farrell’s men were denied outright Six Nations glory as France completed the Grand Slam by defeating England in Paris.

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton tipped his side for glory at next year’s World Cup

Veteran fly-half Sexton said: ‘We’ve got great potential, haven’t we? But we’ve got to make it reality and we’ve got to keep building over the next 18 months.

‘We’ve started talking about it already, that this is the journey, which is a different approach to the previous management that I’ve worked under.

‘Three bonus-point wins in a row after the loss in Paris, to do that I am very proud of this team and everyone on it. It’s an incredible environment.’

Johnny Sexton nailed both conversions to put the home side into a 14-0 lead after half an hour against Scotland.

Ireland led 14-5 at half-time but it had been a scrappy game, illustrated by the fact that all three tries in the opening 40 minutes had been scored by front-rowers.
