Car drives off the edge of a cliff and plunges into the water along Victoria’s famous Great Ocean Road

  • A dozen emergency crews remain at the scene, two hours south of Melbourne

A car travelling along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road has driven off the edge of a cliff and into the water.  

Emergency services were called to the scene at Lorne, two hours south-west of Melbourne, at about 1.20pm on Wednesday. 

‘Investigators have been told a car travelling on the Great Ocean Road left the roadway and veered over a cliff into the ocean,’ Victoria Police said in a statement.

‘It is not known how many occupants were in the car at the time of the crash.’ 

The cause of the crash is not yet known and investigations are ongoing.  

About a dozen emergency crews remain at the scene. 

There is a traffic diversion between The Arches and Deans Marsh-Lorne Road.

Motorists have been told to expect delays in the area and are encouraged to take  alternative routes if possible.
