Car passenger, 28, dies when Ford Fiesta she was in crashes moments after driver refused to stop for police

A 28-year-old woman has died after the car she was in was involved in a crash shortly after it failed to stop for police.

West Midlands Police said a blue Ford Fiesta had fled the police just before the crash happened.

The Fiesta was later found in Crocketts Road, Birmingham at 9.42pm later that night after being involved in a collision with another vehicle.

The woman from the Ford Fiesta sustained serious injuries and later died in hospital.

Three people from the Volkswagen Golf suffered minor injuries with one person taken to hospital to be checked over.

A 34-year-old man is assisting police with their enquiries. 

One resident of Crocketts Road told Birmingham Live: ‘There were lots of police and they shut down the whole of the road. There was a riot van at the bottom of the road.’

One man reportedly fled the scene, Police are now trying to locate him.

The woman’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by the force’s specialist family liaison unit.

The force’s Professional Standards Department has been informed as well as the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

An IOPC spokesperson said: ‘We are independently investigating the circumstances of a police pursuit prior to a collision in Crocketts Road, Birmingham on Saturday night in which a woman died.

‘Our investigation follows a mandatory referral from West Midlands Police. We sent investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedure to begin gathering information.’

Posting on Twitter one user Lissa said: ‘Yet another life lost needlessly due to some t***er who thinks they’re better than the law. Well done dude now you’ve wrecked the life of that poor woman’s family as well as your own.’

West Midlands police are still asking for witnesses of the crash to come forward with any information they may have.
