A terrified neighbour has recounted watching a car accelerate into a crowd of people after a nightclub brawl spilled onto the street.

The fight broke out at a record label launch party at the Gasometer Hotel on Smith Street in Collingwood, Melbourne after 2am on Sunday morning before spilling outside.

A neighbour told The Herald Sun he saw a car do a U-turn before accelerating towards the crowd of more than 200 people.

‘Everyone was screaming – I didn’t see the impact but it was clear he wanted to annihilate people.’

'We have one main offender who was the driver of the car,' Commander Tim Hansen said

A few moments after the brawl, a vehicle smashed into several parked cars and struck a pedestrian.

The 18-year-old man was rushed to hospital for treatment of a serious leg injury after he was pinned between two vehicles.

Six other people were injured and taken to hospital where they were treated for their non-life threatening injuries.

Commander Tim Hansen said there was ‘angst inside the premise which spilled onto the streets’.

‘We have one main offender who was the driver of the car,’ Mr Hansen said.

‘There’s potentially some other people who are key persons of interest but I can’t get into why they are of interest at the moment.’

The violence came after event organiser, J-Nelly, had already posted a warning to all those attending to be on their best behaviour so as not to create more headlines about African violence in Melbourne.

‘Be mindful of your surroundings and understand violence will not be tolerated,’ he wrote on 31 August.

‘We had meetings with federal detectives who are very concerned with the energy, which they have related to the latest sparks of new reports degrading the African community as thugs etc. United we stand.

‘So if you have an issue with an individual let it be and move away. A moment of anger isn’t worth a lifetime of bad labelling.

‘I know each and every single individual who is come to the show is a very mature and intellectual young adult, so let us put that aside and think of one thing and one thing only – turning the f*** up and good vibes only.’

Police investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
