Cardiff University bans ‘white T-shirt socials’

A university student union has banned ‘white T-shirt socials’ on nights out after offensive messages were found scribbled on the tops.

Societies have been ordered to stop the socials after messages such as ‘Consent is a myth’, ‘I love rape’ and ‘the Holocaust was a good time’ were noticed.

Students at Cardiff University have been donning plain white T-shirts and arming themselves with marker pens to write offensive messages on each other’s tops.

But now the university’s student union has issued a crackdown, threatening that an entire society could be punished no matter how many members take part.

An e-mail sent by the student union’s staff said: ‘There seems to be a trend of running white t-shirt socials amongst UK University student groups at the moment.

‘These socials are often getting out of hand and finding their way into the media spotlight due to unacceptable phrases, statements and logos being written on the T-shirts.

‘We strongly advise you to avoid organising such socials, as if unacceptable and offensive comments are found to be written on T-shirts of anyone attending the event, it is highly likely your group will face a suspension from activity and go through a university disciplinary.’

Students seen to be participating in such socials could face suspension from societies – regardless of whether they wrote the messages or not.

Earlier this month university students in Sheffield sparked outraged after wearing T-shirts with ‘rape is not a crime’ and ‘I touch kids’ during a freshers’ week pub crawl.

The T-shirts also had ‘rape me’, ‘consent is a myth’, ‘she CAN be asking for it’ and ‘Maddie is in my cupboard’ – a twisted reference to missing Madeleine McCann.

Also this month, a hockey team faced a police investigation after drawing on Hitler moustaches and wearing T-shirts daubed with swastikas during a night out.

Other shocking slurs on the T-shirts included the phrases 'Twin Towers ftw' and 'Jews are f*****s' - as well as a mis-spelling of the Islamic phrase 'Allahu Akbar'
