Care worker jailed after woman secretly films him kicking her 67-year-old father in the genitals

A woman whose ailing father was hit in the groin by an agency worker is campaigning for all care homes to have in-room CCTV as standard, in a bid to stop abuse in its tracks.

Vangirai Michael Kufa was jailed last week after he was caught on camera physically abusing 67-year-old resident George Stenhouse, from Northwich, Cheshire.

Mr Stenhouse, whose rare brain disease left him bed bound and unable to communicate, became ‘jumpy’, ‘agitated’ and ‘scared’, says his daughter, Catherine Walker, and she decided to install the secret camera to find an explanation.

Accounts assistant Catherine and her husband, Martyn, caught Kufa after wiring up a miniature camera that enabled them to watch Mr Stenhouse, who died in August last year, on their mobile phones.

After a couple of weeks, ‘heartbreaking’ footage emerged of the retired electrical engineer being hit in the genitals and ‘shadow-boxed’ by Kufa.

George Stenhouse, who died in August 2018, was a resident at the Avandale Care Home in Northwich, Cheshire prior to his death. His daughter, Catherine, said she noticed that her father, who had a rare neuro-degenerative disease, was becoming inexplicably ‘agitated’ and ‘jumpy’ and decided to film the care he was getting

Kufa was sentenced to nine months in jail and can no longer work with vulnerable adults.

DC Chris Percival, of Northwich CID, said: ‘The victim’s family placed their trust in Kufa to look after and care for their father in his dying days – and he totally abused this trust.’

When you put a loved member of the family in someone else’s care and that is abused it breaks your heart and that is unforgivable…

Catherine is now campaigning for CCTV to be installed as standard in all UK care homes and plans to take her concerns all the way to parliament.

She has set up a petition, also calling for tougher sentences, named: ‘George’s Law.’

The case is the latest in a string of cruel incidents filmed in care homes.

Raja Khan, 29, was filmed on a hidden camera abusing Ollie Hopton, 20, at the Nursery Road Care Home in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, in 2017.

Khan called Mr Hopton ‘a lazy, lazy a***hole’, dragging him out of bed, poking him repeatedly and, on one occasion, throwing imitation punches near him.

Mr Hopton’s mother, Caroline Hopton, had installed the hidden camera in his room due to problems at a previous care home. The footage uncovered Khan dragging her son out of bed on an occasion when she was unable to visit him.

Further footage recorded from between July and September 2017 showed a total of 11 instances of ill-treatment, of which Judge Taylor said the ‘shadow boxing’ was the ‘most disturbing’ and had caused Mr Hopton ‘great distress’.

Last month, Khan was jailed for 12 months, and suspended for 18 months.
