Caribbean hotel worker who was killed by Connecticut father had drugs and alcohol in his system

The Caribbean island hotel worker who was killed by a Connecticut businessman after he allegedly tried to rob the family at knife point in their hotel room had drugs and alcohol in his system when he died. 

Toxicology reports show that Kenny Mitchel, the hotel employee at the Malliouhana resort in Anguilla, tested positive for cocaine, marijuana and other drugs. 

The also revealed the 27-year-old father-of-one had a blood alcohol level of .181, which is more than double the legal limit in the US and UK. 

This comes as his accused killer Gavin Scott Hapgood is expected to return to the island this Thursday to go on trial where he faces manslaughter charges.   

Hapgood, 44, was with his two young daughters in his hotel room at the upscale Malliouhana resort when he alleges Mitchel pulled a knife and tried to rob them after claiming he came to the room to fix the sink.

Hapgood (pictured, during his arrest) was originally denied bail, but a judge later approved his application for $74,000 in bail. He is expected to return to Anguilla to face manslaughter charges on Thursday

The UBS banker claims the killing was in ‘self-defense to protect the lives of his young daughters and himself.’

The family said in a statement in May that Hapgood was ‘fighting for his life’ and was bitten multiple times in the confrontation. 

According to the spokesperson, Mitchel showed up to the family’s room ‘unannounced in uniform’ and claimed ‘he was there to fix a broken sink before carrying out his sudden, violent attack on the family’. 

Mitchel, originally from Dominica, died on April 13 of prone restraint, asphyxiation and blunt force injuries to his torso, head and neck.

Hapgood was arrested and charged with manslaughter in the case and was originally held at Her Majesty’s Prison in Anguilla after he was denied bail.

But he was later released on $74,000 bond after his attorney appealed to the High Court in a move that sparked anger among Anguillans.   

They demanded that he return to face justice in the British territory of nearly 15,000 people.

After the attack, Hapgood was seen departing the Malliouhana resort and checking into the equally posh Four Seasons hotel where he and his family remained until he was arrested four days later.  

A GoFundMe page created by the Unity for Justice Facebook Group after the death describes Mitchel as a ‘very happy friendly individual.’

The page claims that Hapgood called the front desk of the hotel and asked for Mitchel specifically to come to his room. 

But Hapgood’s spokesperson told PageSix that ‘despite false reports to the contrary, the Hapgoods never called maintenance’.
