History-making linebacker Carl Nassib, who in 2021 became the first openly gay active player in the NFL, called time on his career on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 draft before going on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders.

Nassib spent seven seasons in the league before announcing it was time for his ‘next chapter’. He admitted it was a ‘bittersweet moment’.

‘It really feels like just yesterday starting out as a walk-on at Penn State,’ Nassib wrote on social media.

‘Football has given me more than I ever could have imagined. I can truly hang up my helmet for the last time knowing I gave it everything I had.’

It was in June 2021, while he was playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, that Nassib made history, announcing he was gay.
