Carnival is hotting up! Revellers arm themselves with water sprays to keep cool

Performers dressed in jewelled and glittering costumes have taken to the streets today in London to celebrate the last day of the Notting Hill Carnival.

Nearly one million people are expected to attend the festivities in the streets of west London to celebrate Caribbean culture at a carnival considered the largest street demonstration in Europe.

The carnival has taken place since 1966 and is showing no signs of slowing down as street performers lined up today to take part in the prestigious event.

Dancers were seen arriving in costumes decorated with vibrant feathers and gems and well as outfits which sparkled in the sunlight.

Others were pictured flying Union flags while some had even decided to paint their whole bodies gold for the parade.

Ahead of the parade, drummers and dancers armed themselves with spray bottles filled with water in an attempt to keep cool in the predicted temperatures.

One woman called Ro, 30, is dancing in the parade today and said the carnival is ‘amazing’ and that it was ‘liberating for both men and women’.

‘To have that freedom to celebrate your bodies.’

She grew up coming to Notting Hill, adding: ‘It’s a strong community spirit. We’re mostly volunteers just passionate about dancing.’

Jordan Leigh, 29, led the drummers in the London School of Samba in the role of Rainha de Bateria, or Queen of the Drums.

A Brazilian dancing tradition, Ms Leigh called it an ‘honour’ and ‘a dream come true’ to be leading the band at her fifth Notting Hill Carnival.

Onlookers lined the streets as the floats passed through, and although some homes and businesses were boarded up, many had set-up stalls selling food and water on front steps.

Around one million people are expected in west London across the bank holiday weekend for the carnival, which has been running for more than 50 years.

Celebrations will continue long after the parade has finished, as after parties fill the roads around Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove.

Police have been granted extra search powers to stop and search people attending the street party.

It’s not only dancers that will be getting into the party spirit and revellers were also seen arriving earlier today in extravagant costumers and head gear, proving the the carnival is still a chance to be best dressed.

Yesterday the giant street party fell silent for 72 seconds in memory of the 72 residents of Grenfell Tower who died when the tower block caught fire in June 2017.

It comes after meteorologists confirmed July was the hottest ever around the world with both Britain and Europe caught in a heatwave that caused massive transport disruption by melting railway tracks and causing thunderstorms that grounded planes.

The previous best late August bank holiday temperatures before this weekend were 31.5C (88.7F) at Heathrow in 2001, 27.3C in Velindre, Powys, in Wales and 27C (80.6F) in Knockareven, Co Fermanagh, both in 2003, plus the 26.7C (80.06F) that was recorded in Aviemore, Invernesshire, in Scotland in 1984.

Carnival goers will bake today as morning temperatures at around 11am this morning reached 30C (86.F) and this is set to continue throughout the day.

With the sun coming out people have been advised to make sure they wear sunscreen and many have also been told to prepare for insect bites, which are inevitable in high temperatures.

As many donned outfits which exposed the skin, experts at BillyOh.com suggested people use papaya, peppermint oil and raw honey to help Brits enjoy the most of the good weather and the keep insects from biting them during the carnival.

After last year’s carnival empty food containers and drinks bottles were left out, all attracting insects. A spokesperson for BillyOh.com said that even if these are about, most insects will only bit if they feel threatened, and urged people to try and avoid them altogether.

‘If you are bitten or stung, it’s good to have some foolproof home remedies to hand to soothe the injuries.

‘If the pain and swelling doesn’t let up and the wound is showing signs of infection, see a medical professional as soon as possible.’
