A lucky cat named Charlie miraculously survived an 18-storey fall from a high-rise building, but he has a long road to recovery.

The three-year-old British Shorthair plunged from a Southbank apartment balcony in the Melbourne CBD last week.

He had a five-hour surgery to treat a fractured jaw, a fractured right foot, fractured toes and a cut in his cleft palate.

Amazingly, none of his organs were damaged.

Charlie’s owner Amy Thompson said it was ‘distressing’ to see her cat in so much pain on a GoFundMe page.

‘I can’t believe he survived the fall, I’m devastated this has happened but so relieved he survived,’ she wrote.

‘The vet said cats do this crazy thing where they flatten out and sort of float if they fall from higher levels.

‘They have worse injuries if they fall from lower levels!’

Charlie’s medical bill has come to $4,700 so far and Ms Thompson estimates it will reach $7,000 by the end of his recovery.

‘He can’t close his mouth because of external brace, he has a cone around his head so he can’t touch his jaw, and can’t walk on his leg with the splint,’ Ms Thompson said.

‘He’ll be restless having to spend most of the next six weeks in his bed.’

Owner Amy Thompson said Charlie has a 'bold personality'. 'He loves to play, be affectionate (on his terms) and of course, take lots of naps,' she said on a GoFundMe page
