The animal clutched the rod with both paws at the Murray River in northern Victoria.
The video was captured by Lorraine Johns who was having a picnic while fishing with her family when the koala grabbed the rod.
In the video, she can be heard joking: ‘Catch anything today, mate?’
Ms Johns told 9NEWS: ‘We just turned around and there it was holding onto the fishing pole!’
She said the koala was around them for about half an hour before moving on.
