Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are seen in gorgeous period costumes on the set of Nightmare Alley

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are seen together for the first time on the Toronto set of Nightmare Alley as they co-star in their third film together

They previously costarred in Todd Haynes’ Oscar-nominated period lesbian love story Carol, and are now filming an exciting new project for another esteemed filmmaker.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara were seen together for the first time on the snowy Toronto, Canada set of Guillermo del Toro’s remake of Nightmare Alley on Thursday.

Del Toro, the visionary director behind classics like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape Of Water, is helming this remake of a 1940s film noir, which will also feature Bradley Cooper, Toni Collette, David Strathairn, Willem Dafoe, Ron ‘Hellboy’ Perlman and Richard Jenkins.

In the new images, Blanchett’s blonde locks were coiffed in vintage style curls, and the two-time Academy Award-winning actress had what appears to be a drama-filled, somber look on her made-up face.

She wore a dark overcoat adorned with a floral motif on her shoulders, and had on what looked to be a lovely evening gown underneath.

The star, who plays a psychiatrist, wore dark leather gloves and donned black heels on her feet.

Mara, who plays the young carnival worker Molly, also appeared displaying a grave expression on her face, in front of the same backdrop featuring an art deco-style building placard with a street number.

Rooney’s overcoat was bright red, and closed at the waist.

She wore a red hat and dark gloves and Mary Janes as well. She also carried a purse.

In between takes, the actresses were seen standing next to a vintage Rolls Royce and near some set lights, and both wore modern-looking down jackets over their costumes to stay warm.

All the snaps are awash in flurries of what appears to be fake snow added for the filming.
