Catherine Tyldesley announces the birth of her daughter with husband Tom Pitfield

Catherine Tyldesley, 38, has announced the birth of her daughter with husband of five years Tom Pitfield.

The former Coronation Street actress, who is already mum to son Alfie, six, announced she was expecting her second child in October last year.

Posting on Thursday, the soap star shared a sweet black and white snap of her newborn’s feet, as she told fans ‘we are overjoyed that our family is complete.’

Welcome to the world: Catherine Tyldesley, 38, has announced the birth of her daughter with husband Tom Pitfield

‘We are so happy to announce that our beautiful daughter has arrived. We are grateful beyond words and feel overjoyed that our family is complete,’ Catherine wrote alongside the image of her daughter, who she did not name.

Two weeks before the birth Catherine took to Instagram to reveal her pregnancy felt as long as that of an elephants, writing:

‘Apparently an African Bush Elephant is pregnant for 22 months!!!! I fear that my body may have me confused with an elephant!’

‘It feels like I’ve been pregnant since 1942…cherishing PJs, a bump and copious amounts of pineapple while I can!’

Speaking last year about her pregnancy, Catherine said that although little Alfie wasn’t too keen on the idea of being a big brother at first, he had come around.

‘We were a bit nervous, because I remember asking him a while back ”would you like a brother or sister?” and his response was ”mummy I’d rather you didn’t”,’ she laughed.

‘We waited until after the 12 week scan to tell him and he took it really well. He was super excited and we were thrilled to bits.’

Catherine and her husband announced that they were expecting their second child in October but admitted during her pregnancy that they hadn’t thought of any names yet.

Speaking to OK! after the announcement, Catherine gushed:  ‘We’re absolutely elated. We feel so lucky. When we found out, I just burst into tears’.

The pregnancy came after the star struggled with two years of experiencing phantom pregnancy symptoms, due to a hormonal imbalance.

‘I took so many tests as I was convinced I was actually pregnant, but in fact my body was just mimicking a pregnancy,’ she said. ‘So this time, even when my stomach was a bit swollen, I just thought: Oh hormonal imbalances again!

‘Tom was in bits when we found out we are having a little girl. He has suddenly gone all mushy. I’m sure she will have him wrapped around her little finger.’

Catherine and Tom had a whirlwind romance, and after only four months of dating discovered they were expecting their son Alfie.

Speaking to Notebook magazine, the actress said the meeting Tom ‘was so, so out of the blue. I’m dead lucky. He ticks every box’.

Of their surprise pregnancy, she admitted ‘it was a shock for us but we were both ready. The fact that I wasn’t nervous about telling him proved a point in my head that he was the right guy for me.’

The couple married in a Cheshire ceremony one year after welcoming their son.

Catherine previously admitted she’d love a home birth second time around as she recalled being ‘hospitalised, induced with synthetic hormones and cut downstairs’ during her first labour – but also insisted she’d ‘go through any which way’ to get her unborn daughter here safely.

The actress took to Instagram where she uploaded candid shots from when she welcomed son Alfie back in March 2015, and explained that her dream ‘idyllic’ birth plan went out of the window when she ended up 15 days overdue.

Catherine penned in a lengthy caption: ‘Your ‘Birth Story’ might not always go to plan. Mine didn’t. With a birthing pool set up in our conservatory and a very holistic midwife, I was hell bent on having a natural birth at home.

‘I had my heart set on an idyllic birth, daffodils just starting to bloom in the garden and the odd butterfly roaming past as I held my newborn son. Alas, this wasn’t the case. I ended up 15 days over due, and needed to be hospitalised and induced.

‘Babies heart rate started to dip and I was prepped for a C-Section. When suddenly as if by magic, I felt the need to push!

‘With gas and air I pushed for an hour, towards the end the midwives cut me downstairs to get the baby out… but honestly… I didn’t feel a thing. Adrenaline had taken over.’

‘Eye of The Tiger was playing and I was in full competition with myself!! This was it! The final encore! Come on Cath!! You can do this!! With Tom by my side like some kind of professional boxing coach- Alfie finally arrived!

‘I didn’t have the birth I dreamed of… but not one bit of that mattered. He was here. We were all safe, all healthy and all abundantly grateful to medical staff around us.

‘This time, I’m much more chilled. What will be will be. I’d love to birth my daughter in a birthing pool, but honestly – I’d go through any which way to get her here safely. Birth is magic. It is a miracle. However it happens!
