A Catholic priest has been charged after allegedly assaulting five children at a boarding school in the NSW Southern Highlands in the 1980s.

Father Anthony Caruana, 77, indecently assaulted the children who were aged between 12 and 15, at Chevalier College in Burradoo. 

He was a dormitory manager, rugby coach and band teacher at the school, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.

The 77-year-old was arrested at a home in Kensington, Sydney, on Friday morning after detectives launched an investigation into allegations of sexual assaults that occurred between 1982 and 1988.

He was charged with six counts of sexual assault and acts of indecency with a person aged under 16 and two counts of gross indecency with a boy.  

Caruana was granted bail and is due to appear at Waverley Local Court on May 22.
