Celebrity personal trainer Joe Wicks or The Body Coach shares his ultimate fitness guide

The celebrity personal trainer behind millions of incredible before and after transformations has shared his guide to your best body yet in 2023, and the things you need to eliminate from your diet to get and stay in good shape.

British fitness personality Joe Wicks, 37, had been popular for around five years as a nutrition coach, PT and chef on Instagram when he hit the stratosphere during the coronavirus lockdown in 2020.

Joe started sharing daily workout videos on YouTube entitled PE with Joe, and the videos soon became a sensation, garnering more than 100m views globally.

Now, Joe – who is reportedly worth $26million – is bringing his PE with Joe workouts to Australia with two mass events in Sydney and Melbourne during February.

Joe told FEMAIL that there are several mistakes people make when they’re trying to lose weight, and there are other things they need to focus on instead.

‘The biggest mistake I think men and women make is that they try to change too many things at once and often too fast which makes it very difficult to sustain,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘My advice is that you’re far better off avoiding low calorie restrictive diets, and instead you should simply focus on healthy cooking more at home, and adding lots of variety into your meals.’

The PT said all too often, people ‘go all out’ when they start a new plan or regime by joining a new gym which they ‘might struggle to attend regularly’.

‘I always say to my clients that they should just focus on home workouts,’ Joe said.

‘This reduces the friction and means no matter how busy your day is, you can always find 20 minutes to squeeze in a quick HIIT workout.’

The three positive changes to make for your body today 

1. Sleep more: Joe said sleep is the foundation for everything and when you sleep more, it knocks on to how much you work out, how happy you are and what you eat. 

2. Embrace home cooking: When you cook at home, you’re always going to be eating better than when you eat out. He said you need to ‘fall back in love with cooking’ and add variety to your meals.

3. Move more: Whether it’s walking, gardening, swimming, cycling or running, try and move more in your day to boost your mood, body and mental health. 

While many people think a ‘brand new body’ is all about diet and exercise, Joe explained there are other things that also influence how in shape you will be.

‘Your top priority should always be sleep,’ he said.

‘It’s something we all often struggle with but I always say sleep is the foundation for everything. 

‘When you get regular good quality sleep, you wake up with the energy to work out, you feel less stressed, make better food choices and you will be able to achieve all the things you had planned.’

The PT’s second priority for anyone wanting to tone up is home cooking:

‘The food we eat has a huge impact on our mood and mental health, so focusing on cooking and taking control in the kitchen will massively boost your mood and energy levels,’ he said.

On top of this, Joe recommends ‘moving more’ – whether that’s walking outside, gardening, cycling, swimming, running or roller blading – as he said it ‘all makes you feel good’.

‘When you move your body you release stress, feel calmer, happier and more energised,’ he said.

‘Focus on these three things and always come back to movement. I always say it will change your life.’

Joe – who has a busy home life with three young children – said he likes to get his personal movement in early in the day before his children are awake.

BREAKFAST: Scrambled eggs on toast or porridge with berries, coconut flakes and almond butter.

LUNCH: Chicken, mixed veg and noodle stir fry.

DINNER: Something from one of his cookbooks like a bolognese, chilli, curry or stir fry. 

‘Normally, I’ll wake up at 6am to do a workout first thing on an empty stomach,’ he said.

‘In order to have the energy to do this, I have to have been in bed and asleep by 10pm. It doesn’t have to be fasted, I just find I have more energy that way.’

Following this, the 37-year-old will have some breakfast – typically ‘something quick’ like scrambled eggs on toast or porridge with berries, coconut flakes and almond butter.

The rest of Joe’s day on a plate is similarly healthy. 

Lunch might be a chicken, mixed veg and noodle stir fry, and dinner is early at around 5.30pm with his children.

‘It’s usually a recipe from one of my cookbooks, like a bolognese, chilli, curry or stir fry,’ he said.

‘Quick, simple and easily repeatable meals work best for us, and we always save leftovers for either ours or the kids’ lunches the next day.’ 

He doesn’t deprive himself of dessert either, and will make healthy twists on classic favourites.

When it comes to what we should more and less of, the PT said we should all be considering and eating a ‘wide variety of plants’.

‘By that I mean more veggies, nuts, seeds, grains, fruits, beans and pulses,’ Joe said.

‘The variety of nutrients from plants leads to improved gut health which is so important for the body itself, but it also helps our mood and mental health as most of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut.’

Joe also said people need to make sure they’re eating enough protein, as protein is what repairs and rebuilds the muscles after a hard day.

‘Think meat, eggs, chicken, fish, tofu, nuts and seeds,’ he said.

On the flipside, you should steer clear of processed foods and fast food as much as possible.

Joe’s current ‘favourite thing to do’ for his health is to take either an ice bath or cold shower daily.

‘I find it really helps with my mood and energy,’ he said. 

‘It’s taken me a while to really embrace the cold but now not a day goes by where I don’t start the day with an ice cold shower or bath. 

‘I actually look forward to it and the mental benefits it gives me.’

INGREDIENTS

Chicken breasts

Chorizo

Mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil

Extra Virgin olive oil

Salt and pepper

Pasta of your choice

Spoonful of green pesto

Dollop of cream cheese 

METHOD

1. Slice open your chicken to make a nice big pocket and stuff it with chorizo, mozzarella cheese and some fresh basil.

2. Add salt and pepper, along with a drizzle of olive oil and stick it in the oven.

3. Boil some pasta and once it has cooled down, add a big dollop of green pesto and a spoonful of cream cheese.

4. Mix it altogether and then put the chicken on top of the pasta.

British fitness phenomenon Joe Wicks has announced his first ever PE with Joe Australian tour, hosting two mass workouts in Melbourne and Sydney in February to raise money for local charities Reachout Australia and the Taronga Conservation Society.

The Melbourne workout will take place on Saturday 25 February, while the Sydney event will take place on Sunday 26 February.
