Changing Rooms home designed by Laurence Llewelyn Bowen is for sale

A house in Cheshire that includes a Japanese-inspired bedroom designed by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and appeared on TV’s Changing Rooms is for sale for £439,950.

If the property achieves the asking price, it will have sold for £129,950 more than it was last bought for just over two years ago at £310,000 in April 2021.

The Macclesfield family home appeared on Channel 4’s Changing Rooms last year, when one of the four bedrooms received a makeover by the well-known interior designer.

Laurence transformed the room with a Japanese theme that he called ‘glamikaze’.

The design remit was to create the illusion of a non-symmetrical space that was going to be used by a teenager for sleeping, working and gaming.

The traditionally square-shaped bedroom was partially divided by creating a diagonal wall and arch structures.

The Japanese theme included bespoke wallpaper produced exclusively by Laurence – and he even hand signed one of the walls.

There is a diagonally placed Japanese-style bed with arch structures and beams, concealing a hidden workstation with a built-in curve-shapped desk and deep storage shelving.

There are blue and white Japanese crane wallpaper designed by Laurence, as well as bright red ceiling and feature wall.

These three colours are brought together in a bed spread, as well as a two bean bags.

During the Changing Rooms episode, Laurence discusses applying the bespoke wallpaper that came from one of his drawings.

‘The clock is ticking. An integral part of the scheme to zone the space needs applying. The wallpaper is absolutely key to what is going on here,’ he said.

‘The structure is great, but without the wallpaper this is just a big lump of MDF in the middle of the room.’

Outside there is a wall courtyard that is accessed from bi-folding doors in the kitchen and also by a timber gate that leads to a side ginnel.

The four-bedroom house is in Macclesfield’s Riseley Street, where the average price of a property sold in the past 12 months is £307,500.

It compares to an average for the country as a whole of £355,448, according to property website Zoopla.

The popularity of Laurence and Changing Rooms

The home improvement show Changing Rooms had a successful run on TV between 1996 and 2004. It was revived on Channel 4 in 2021.

 It features couples swapping houses with friends or neighbours with each pair decorating one room in each other’s homes.

This leads up to a finale with both couples seeing their rooms, and meeting up again, almost invariably on still friendly terms. 

Changing Rooms includes some top designers, including Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen who appeared on the original BBC version of the show.

 While Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is best known for Changing Rooms, he has worked in other areas of TV. This includes appearing as a judge on the 2010 series of the ITV reality talent show Popstar to Operastar as a critic alongside Meat Loaf, and classically trained mentors Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazón. The series was hosted by Myleene Klass and Alan Titchmarsh.
