Chappell Roan has revealed why she often wears heavy white face paint.
During her Friday night Midwest Princess tour stop in Manchester, the 26-year-old singer — who just performed at the VMAs — spoke candidly to her audience.
The Willard, Missouri native shared in a now-viral video shared online: ‘Other people in my hometown would call gay people clowns. That’s why I actually wear my white face.’
She emphasized, ‘Like b**ch, I’ll show you a clown.’
Roan, whose music career reached a fever pitch this year, added, ‘This is what I care about because I see you, and I see a community. I really needed this whenever I was 15. I needed it so bad. To just be in a room of people that looked like me.’

Concertgoers wildly applauded Chappell as she concluded: ‘Thank you for showing up and know that this is a place where you belong.’
It comes after she took to Instagram on Friday morning to share a behind-the-scenes look at her beauty preparations before appearing at Wednesday’s MTV Video Music Awards.
Engaging her nearly five million followers, she wrote, ‘the @vmas with @maccosmetics.’
Roan’s red carpet look gothic-inspired red carpet makeup look included hyper-thin eyebrows, burgundy-toned eyeshadow, and gold mascara on her lower lashes.
Her lips were coated in a burnt red shade of matte lipstick.
She switched up the look before she took the stage to perform in a medieval-style suit of armor.
Makeup artist Andrew Dahling used multiple heavily-pigmented colors on her eyelids, including gold, blue, and magenta.
Chappell went on to win a moon man for Best New Artist at the annual awards show.

In her acceptance speech, the outspoken singer-songwriter dedicate her win ‘to queer and trans people that fuel pop’ and ‘to the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love or hate.’
But the night was not without blunders, as the music artist clapped back at a red carpet photographer who shouted ‘shut the f*** up’ as she turned away to adjust her outfit.
In footage of the incident Chappell turned and yelled back: ‘YOU shut the f*** up!’
She added: ‘No! Not me, b****!’ prompting one woman who witnessed the encounter to encourage her to ‘Tell him, girl!’
