The Princess Charlotte effect? Charlotte tops the list for the most popular baby names for girls while Noah and Oliver are tied in for first place for boys

  • Charlotte is the most popular name given to baby girls within NSW in 2018
  • Noah and Oliver tied in first place with 321 male newborns given each name
  • Liam and Harper ousted former favourites Henry and Zoe in the past ten years

While many parents believe their child is one in a million, if their name is Charlotte then they’re actually one of almost 500 in New South Wales.

The royal name topped the state’s list for baby girls in 2018 with 498 newborns named Charlotte in the last year followed by Amelia (451), Olivia (446), Mia (442) and Ava (407).

‘Princess Charlotte may be fourth in line for the throne, but the name is still number one for girls in NSW, beating Amelia and Olivia to the top spot,’ Attorney General Mark Speakman said in a statement.

Isla, Chloe, Grace, Harper and Emily also made the top ten for girls’ names.

Following the royal theme, William also made the list at number three for boys born in NSW with 293 babies bestowed with the name in 2018.

However, Noah and Oliver tied for first place with 321 newborns given each name.

Lucas and Jack were also popular with 269 and 268 respectively.

Ethan, Liam, Alexander, Thomas and James also made the top ten.

The top ten names may not have changed too much in the past ten years, with only Liam and Harper ousting former favourites Henry and Zoe, but Mr Speakman said the list provides an interesting insight into families and communities across the state.

‘While traditional names dominate the top 10, we have seen a significant increase in the popularity of Muhammad (63rd in 2017 to 24th in 2018) and Ali (64th in 2017 to 41st in 2018) reflecting the diversity of our state,’ Mr Speakman said.

A final list of the top 100 baby names will be released by April.
