Cheerleader’s sassy expression becomes a meme

A 13-year-old cheerleader has already become one of the emblematic memes of 2018 after pulling a series of supremely sassy faces.

Ryan Cummings, from North Carolina, put her game face on at the beginning of a very high-energy routine earlier this month, before she and her teammates pulled off impeccably coordinated back flips, jumps and stunts during the Spirit of Hope National Championship in Charlotte.

After she and her teammates took to the stage, Ryan, who is in eighth grade, looked at the audience, who was cheering loudly, and while doing so, looked incredibly fierce.

‘When I made that face, I was just thinking, I really want my team to kill it,’ the teenager told BuzzFeed about the performance.

Twitter users promptly took notice of the cheerleader’s sassy expressions, and have since used a GIF of the moment to illustrate a variety of situations. A single clip of Ryan has now been watched a whopping 40 million times, as part of a tweet reading simply ‘big mood’.

For one person, Ryan’s face corresponds to what happens ‘when my teacher asks me a question thinking I’m not paying attention but I get it right.’

Someone else surmised the moment with this dialogue: ‘Him: “Are you going to drop that attitude?” Me: “What attitude?”‘

One Twitter user, after watching the GIF, was reminded of the movie Legally Blonde, in which Reese Witherspoon’s character Elle Woods solves a murder case thanks to her knowledge of perms.

For that person, the GIF encapsulated the spirit of ‘Elle Woods after proving that Chutney Windham was not in the shower when her father was shot because she got a perm earlier that day and the water would have deactivated the immonium thygocalate’.

Ryan finds her newfound online fame as a meme ‘crazy’ as well as ‘kind of weird and funny.’

‘I never thought I’d see my face on so many social media pages,’ she said.

Her teachers, mother, and most people at her school have now all seen the meme too. Ryan hopes that her sassy expressions land her a spot on Ellen DeGeneres’ show in the future.
