A top rum distillery has decided to give expectant parents six months parental leave at full pay.

Diageo, the maker of Bundaberg Rum, will roll out its new family leave policy for all employees from July 1.

The company said it is setting a global minimum standard of four weeks paternity leave in all markets and a significant number of its businesses are moving to 26 weeks fully paid paternity leave in countries such as Australia and Singapore.

Diageo announced a similar policy for its staff in the UK last month.

It said parents in the UK are eligible for the fully 26 paid weeks regardless of gender and sexual orientation. Employees who adopt a child will have the same benefits.

Diageo’s chief human resource officer Mairéad Nayager said the policy will ensure women and men are supported to have time with their new baby regardless of where they live and work.

‘We are committed to creating a fully inclusive and diverse workforce and we strongly believe that businesses play a significant role in shaping the future of society,’ she said.

‘Global businesses like Diageo must make bold moves on policies and the environments in which their employees work to ensure that the progress people deserve happens.’
