Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona player ratings in Champions League

Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions league last-16 tie on Tuesday night.

Willian opened the scoring for Chelsea in the second-half but it was cancelled out by a Lionel Messi strike.

Sportsmail’s SAMI MOKBEL has rated the performances from the players on both sides at Stamford Bridge.

CHELSEA (3-4-3)

Thibaut Courtois – 6.5

Would have expected a busy night, but his defence – on the whole – were excellent.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7.5

Chelsea’s captain for the night was composed and controlled on an extremely active night.

Andreas Christensen – 6

Grew into the game after a rocky start but his error cost Chelsea dear.

Anthony Rudiger – 7

Preferred ahead of Gary Cahill. His pace and power was vital in defence. Booked.

Victor Moses – 7.5

Reined in his attacking instincts as Alba and Iniesta pushed the Nigerian backwards.

Cesc Fabregas – 6.5

Was starved of possession and had to keep a lid on his creative instincts as a result.

N’Golo Kante – 6.5

Relentlessly snapped away in midfield. Didn’t give Barca’s creators a second’s peace.

Marcos Alonso – 6.5

Needed eyes at the back of his head to cope with Barca’s attack and right-back Sergi Roberto.

Willian – 9

Hit both posts before his moment of glory capped a scintillating display from the Brazilian.

Eden Hazard – 8

Despite Chelsea’s lack of possession, the brilliant Belgian still caused Barca huge problems.

Pedro – 6

Against his former club, the Chelsea winger was the most quiet of Chelsea’s front three.

Subs:

Morata (for Pedro 83); Drinkwater (for Fabregas 84)

Subs not used:

Caballero, Giroud, Zappacosta, Cahill, Hudson-Odoi

Antonio Conte – 7.5

His side hung in there when the going got tough and Chelsea got their reward thanks to Willian’s goal. But the Italian will be disappointed his team couldn’t hold on to a vital victory. He challenged Chelsea to play the ‘perfect’ game in search of victory last night – he nearly got his wish.

BARCELONA (4-3-3)

Marc-Andre ter Stegen – 5.5

Will have nightmares about Willian’s right foot for the foreseeable future.

Sergi Roberto – 7

Acted more as a right winger than a full-back for large parts. So comfortable in possession.

Gerard Pique – 6.5

Looked to have a cigar on until Chelsea rattled the Catalans towards the end of the first half.

Samuel Umtiti – 6

Physically strong, but struggled to deal with Chelsea’s fluid attack when they clicked into gear.

Jordi Alba – 7

Used his blistering pace to get out of trouble at times but still a joy to watch.

Sergio Busquets – 8

Ran the show. One or two touch passing. An absolute midfield artist. Booked.

Ivan Rakitic – 6.5

Suffered some sloppy moments but kept things ticking over. Booked.

Paulinho – 6.5

The former Spurs man showed energy in midfield but squandered a glorious chance to open the scoring.

Lionel Messi – 8

Provided some edge of your seat moments and finally broke his duck against Chelsea.

Luis Suarez – 6.5

Back in England, the controversial Uruguayan endured a frustrating night. Booked.

Andres Iniesta – 7

Perhaps not the force he once was but still posed Chelsea problems with his guile.

Subs:

Vidal 6 (for Paulinho 62); Gomes (for Iniesta 90)

Subs not used:

Cillessen, Denis Suarez, Dembele, Digne, Vermaelen

Ernesto Valverde – 7

His side dominated possession but struggled to open up Chelsea’s expertly organised defence. But the Barca boss will be happy with his night’s work. His team are on level terms and have that vital away goal. He’ll expect his team to finish the job in Catalonia.

Referee:

Cuneyt Cakir (TUR) – 6.5

Kept the game moving and rightly turned down Busquet’s tame penalty appeal.

Attendance: 37,741

MOM: Willian
