‘Christian Pulisic could be fantastic for Juventus:’ Veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini backs his former club to sign the Chelsea winger who he believes can bolster the Italian side’s attack

  • Giorgio Chiellini has urged Juventus to sign Christian Pulisic from Chelsea
  • The Italian side on Friday completed the signing of winger Angel di Maria
  • But the 38-year-old claims Juve still need to land another winger this summer
  • Pulisic has grown frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities at the Blues

Giorgio Chiellini has urged his former club Juventus to sign Christian Pulisic to boost their attacking options next season.

The veteran defender, who turns 38 next month, departed the Italian giants in the summer following 18 years in Turin to move to American side Los Angeles FC.

Juventus looked to be heading into the new season short on wingers with Federico Chiesa’s fitness set to be uncertain having already missed much of the year due to rupturing his cruciate ligaments in January.

The Bianconeri did however announce the one-year deal of Angel di Maria on Friday following the expiry of his Paris Saint-Germain contract.

Chiellini though claims the Serie A side still need to add more depth in the area, recommending a third winger in the Chelsea star Pulisic.

‘Honestly, it’s the first time I heard it, but I think Juventus needs a winger like Pulisic,’ Chiellini told ESPN’s Futbol Americas.

‘Pulisic is very good, I think, when he starts from the side and comes inside, and with the injury of Chiesa — he [will] surely still return, but not before September, and in the first months, surely he can play every game.

‘With the [arrival] of Angel Di Maria, Pulisic could be the fantastic third winger for Juventus. He has improved year by year, he did a fantastic season in Chelsea.’

Talks between Chelsea and Juventus have resumed over a potential swap deal involving Christian Pulisic plus cash for Matthijs De Ligt.

AC Milan have also been monitoring the situation of the forward, who has grown frustrated by his lack of starts under Tuchel. The Italian sides were initially waiting to see if Chelsea would be open to a sale, and that does not appear to be the case.

Pulisic arrived at Stamford Bridge for £58million in 2019, but neither Juventus nor AC Milan would be able to matching the fee, and would instead look for a cut-price deal.

While away on international duty with the USA, he was able to address his future when speaking to reporters, and admitted that he wants ‘to get more playing time’.

‘I want to be on the field as much as I can and be the sharpest I can be and fit as well,’ he added, hinting towards his ambitions to take on a greater role next season.

Pulisic endured a mixed season at Stamford Bridge, which started with him missing nine of the first 10 games of the Premier League season due to a Covid-19 infection and an ankle injury.

But he went on to start 13 times in 22 league games, netting six times and grabbing two assists. In addition he also netted twice in seven Champions League appearances.
