The 27-year-old Italy international Emerson was signed by Chelsea in 2018 from Roma for a fee in the region of £20m.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are still competing on four fronts this season, even if they are all but out of the Premier League title race sitting 10 points behind leaders Manchester City.

They are in the final of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Liverpool at the end of February. They meet Plymouth in round four of the FA Cup and are Champions League holders – they face Lille in the round of 16.

United, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot, have two games in hand on Chelsea which if they win. would put them just three points behind.

London rivals Tottenham have four games in hand on Chelsea due to Covid-19 postponements and four wins would take Antonio Conte’s side above them.
