Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has paid £92.9m in compensation to sacked managers since 2004

Chelsea were this week ordered to pay their former boss Antonio Conte £9million in compensation, taking their spending on sacking managers to £92.9m.

Conte was dismissed last July despite leading Chelsea to the FA Cup after they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Claudio Ranieri, May 2004

Compensation: £6m

To the surprise of no one, Ranieri became Abramovich’s first sacking. His future was in doubt since the arrival of the owner, who began to want more in return for his significant spending.

Jose Mourinho, September 2007

Compensation: £23.1m (for him and his staff)

Long-standing high-profile differences with Abramovich saw Mourinho leave the club the first time. This figure was revealed in results for the financial year ending in June 2008.

Avram Grant, May 2008

Compensation: £5.2m

Grant was apparently left feeling ‘betrayed, upset and angry’ following his sacking, days after his side lost to Manchester United in the Champions League final. He spent eight months in charge.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, February 2009

Compensation: £12.6m

Chelsea sacked Scolari after just seven months in the job. The club failed to sustain a serious challenge for the Premier League, finishing seven points off title winners Manchester United.

Carlo Ancelotti, May 2011

Compensation: £6m

Chelsea sacked Ancelotti after he ended his second season at the club without a trophy. In 2009-10, he did the Double by winning the Premier League and FA Cup.

Andre Villas-Boas, March 2012

Compensation: £12m

Villas-Boas got a hefty payment for just nine months’ work. They were still in the Champions League and FA Cup, as well as fighting for a top-four spot in the Premier League at the time.

Roberto Di Matteo, November 2012

Compensation: £10.7m

Di Matteo won the Champions League and FA Cup as caretaker and was given a two-year deal. He was then sacked just eight months later, following a Champions League loss to Juventus.

Rafa Benitez, May 2013

Compensation: None

Benitez, having been installed as ‘interim manager’, left in anger and said: ‘The fans are not helping us. At the end of the season I will leave. They don’t have to worry about me.’

Jose Mourinho, December 2015

Compensation: £8.3m (for him and his staff)

Chelsea sacked Mourinho seven months after he led them to the Premier League title. They had lost nine of their 16 league games and were 16th, one point above the relegation places.

Compensation: None

Hiddink took over as interim following the sacking of Mourinho. During his time in charge, he called on Abramovich to halt his hire-and-fire approach and find a long-term appointment.

A sacking we all saw coming. Conte returned to pre-season training but was then dismissed. The club had finished fifth in the Premier League in 2017-18 after winning the title in 2016-17.
