A power cut at Chessington World of Adventures caused chaos today, as hundreds of parents and children had to be led down ladders when the rides came to a grinding halt.

Parents enjoying a half-term break with their children at the popular theme park were left stranded in the car park amid hour long delays after bosses closed for the day.

Dozens of theme park goers took to Twitter to vent their anger at Chessington bosses for the lack of a contingency plan following the outtage.

One person said: ‘Stuck in swamped car park in Chessington haven’t moved for nearly 2 hours. No one cares. No one wants to help. Quick enough to take your money!’

The power cut, which affected a wide area of the village of Chessington, Surrey including residential homes, was believed to have been caused by an underground cable fault.

Staff at the site had to carry out several high-level rescues from some of the rides where people and children had been trapped when they stopped in midair.

No-one was injured and everyone was led down ladders to safety.

A spokesman for Chessington World of Adventures said: ‘We can confirm that several high level evacuations had to be carried out.

‘We have a well rehearsed procedure for such events. I do not know how many people were involved.

‘UK Power has told us that the cut affects properties outside the resort as well as ourselves and they have said that electricity supply may not be restored until 5.30pm.

‘As a result we have re-validated all the tickets of those in the park so that they can re-visit on another day between now and July 31,’ the spokesman added.
