Child, three, is stabbed to death and a man is fighting for life as police swarm unit block

A three-year-old child is dead and a man is in critical condition following a suspected stabbing in south-west Sydney. 

Emergency services were called to a unit complex on on Washington Avenue, Riverwood, following reports of a concern for welfare at 4pm today. 

The three-year-old’s body was found by police and paramedics inside the unit, alongside a man, 45, who had suffered serious injuries. He is currently fighting for his life in St George Hospital.

It is understood the child was stabbed to death by the man, who was known to him.

The man then attempted to take his own life. 

‘Officers attached to Campsie Police Area Command attended and found a three-year-old boy deceased inside the unit,’ a police spokesperson said.

‘Police also located a 45-year-old man with serious injuries; he was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics taken to hospital in a critical condition.’

A crime scene has been established and officers are investigating.

Footage of the incident showed a fleet of police cars and ambulances rushing to the scene, as horrified onlookers stood behind a police cordon.
