Children hurt when roof of Taiwanese coach is ‘shorn’ off

This is the shocking moment when five schoolchildren were injured when the roof of the bus they were travelling in was ‘shaved off’ in southern Taiwan.

The bus collided with a vehicle height bar, injuring five high school pupils.

Children from the city of Kaohsiung in south-western Taiwan were travelling in the northern city of Taoyuan when the crash happened on a bridge.

Dashcam footage provided by a passing driver captured the moment the coach slams into the height restriction bar, which tears through the top of the vehicle where the pupils and teachers were sitting.

The momentum carries the vehicle several meters forwards, and the top of the bus is “shaved” by the thick metal bar, which finally came to a stop in the middle of the bus.

The driver whose dashcam captured the incident was travelling in the opposite direction on the bridge. He said they heard the loud crash, which destroyed the vehicle height bar in the process.

The stunned pupils and teachers then slowly got off the bus one after the other and sat down on the bridge until the authorities arrived.

The injured pupils are being treated at a local hospital, reports said.

The police are investigating the driver, who they believe may have been unaware of the height restriction on the road.
