Burns then dumped Mr Megherbi in a shallow grave and attempted to burn the body, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Michael Jones QC said Burns made ‘every conceivable effort’ to conceal the killing, as he was jailed for 10-and-a-half years for the killing.

Prosecutors said an officer from South Wales Police was tasked with searching an area alongside the A48 in Pentwyn on November 28 last year. He found a shovel.

Officers continued to search the area and discovered a ‘raised mound of earth’.

Mr Jones said soil was removed by a rake and a light-coloured item became apparent.

He told the court: ‘It looked like the lower bones of a human leg.’

The area was cordoned off and the remains were taken for forensic examination.

The court heard the victim’s family were ‘distressed’ they could not take his remains back to Algeria, as forensic investigation was ongoing.

Prosecutors said the body was ‘mostly skeletonised’ and the skull was blackened on the top around a fracture.

The court heard Burns also bought lighter fluid, petrol and matches in the days following the killing.

Mr Jones suggested the steps taken by the defendant to conceal the body were ‘extreme’.

Mr Justice Clive Lewis said his attempts to dispose of evidence indicated that his culpability was high.

He said: ‘An argument broke out between you and a struggled ensued lasting three minutes before you killed him.

‘You struck Mr Megherbi a single blow to the skull with a weapon – a sword. It was described as a ninja sword.’

Burns, from Pennsylvania in Llanedeyrn, denied murder, but admitted the alternative count of manslaughter.

He was jailed for 10-and-a-half years and must serve up to half in prison before being released on licence.
