Chinese city shames debtholders with faces on billboards

  • Debtholders’ names and photos are being shown above busy streets of Xi’an
  • They had been informed by the court to return the money but have failed to 
  • The court hoped this could prompt them to return the loans as soon as possible 

A Chinese city has publicly shamed its residents who refuse to pay off their debts by showing their photos on billboards, according reports on state media. 

Their names and other personal details have also been put on the large LED screens above some of the busiest streets of Xi’an.

The city’s intermediate court said it was a way for them to prompt these people who had already been informed of their financial obligations to return the money.

According to People’s Daily Online, the authority started showing the debtholders’ pictures yesterday in 13 districts of Xi’an.

The provincial capital has more than eight million people and is famous for the terracotta warriors.

The information is shown above the road with the most traffic.

More than 400 people have had their information publicised after they failed to fulfill their legal obligations.

Their faces would be shown for five days until December 26.

The Xi’an Intermedia Court said more debtholders’ information would be released in January.  

Zhang Lunan, the head of the Enforcement Bureau of the Xi’an Intermedia Court, told a local reporter that the court would impose other measures on the borrowers, including detention, financial penalty and travel restrictions.
