Chinese mother gives birth to a boy in the hospital lift

A woman in China has given birth to a healthy 7.5lb boy inside a hospital lift.

Onlookers joined forces with medical staff to help the expectant mother deliver her son in just three minutes.

The woman, who already had one child, was 39 weeks pregnant. She was already in labour and was being rushed to the delivery room.

According to China’s Chutian Metropolitan Daily, the mother, known by her surname Fang, showed signs of labour on the morning of February 7.

She was taken to the Hubei Maternity and Child Healthcare Centre in Wuhan by her husband.

However, Ms Fang appeared to have contractions when she was walking towards the lift. Onlooker Li Yanxia called nearby security guards and on-duty nurses for assistance, she told the reporter.

It’s said Ms Fang was in pain and about to give birth after ‘a few pushes’.

CCTV clip in the lift shows at least four people carrying Ms Fang into the lift that would take her to the delivery room on the sixth floor.

Dr Zhang Huanfei was called to help deliver the baby.

The newborn, a boy, was healthy and weighed about 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg).

The baby was put into an incubator for two hours for observation, and is currently in stable condition.

Ms Fang’s husband told the reporter that the couple did not expect the labour to last just a few minutes.

‘She was in a 15 hours labour when she gave birth to our first child. Our whole family did not think that this time would be so short,’ he said.

Dr Pang Min, a deputy officer of the healthcare centre of the hospital, has given advise to expectant mothers.

Dr Pang said under the circumstances when they have to give birth on the road, it’s most important that they make sure to lie on a flat surface. Clothes should be placed under her bottom too.
